Four  Scouters from Housatonic Council Complete Didactic Component of Wood Badge Training

On October 12, 2009 four Scouters from Housatonic Council completed the didactic  training component of NE II 189 Wood Badge class sponsored by the Connecticut Rivers Council at Camp JN Webster.  Scouters participating by patrol are: Hailey King, Maurice Donini, and Al Shigo from the Owl Patrol and Russ Shimmer from the Bear Patrol.  In addition, seven Housatonic Scouters attended a Wood Badge Course Conducted by the CT Yankee Council.

The course consists of the nationally advanced leadership training for adult leaders conducted over six days of training (two three day weekends). Following the didactic course, the leaders must successfully complete five projects a.k.a "tickets" in service to their primary position in Scouting over the course of 18 months. According to Tom Wilson, Vice President of Program for Housatonic Council and Troop Guide for the Course for the past three years "Wood Badge is Scouting's premier training program for adult leaders.  Over the past four years 23 Scouters from Housatonic Council have enrolled in Wood Badge training which is remarkable given the size of our Council.  Wood Badge Training was established in 1819 by Baden-Powell at Gilwell Field, England. Wood Badge recipients now number more than 100,000 and can be found in all corners of the world. By participating in the course, the Scouters from our council have invested a significant amount of their time and energy in advancing their professional growth in service to our council. The results of their commitment to Scouting will not only significantly enhance the future of our council, but more importantly in service to our youth!" Well done Critters!....We look forward to monitoring the progress of your "tickets" in your professional growth and service to our youth.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- February 4, 2009 -

As a result of the expansion of Peanut Corporation of America's (PCA) Salmonella related recall to include all peanut ingredient products produced in their Blakely, Georgia facility since January 1, 2007, Weaver Popcorn Company has issued a precautionary voluntary recall for the following product:

9.5 oz. Trail's EndR Caramel Corn with Peanuts, with code date markings of
"102861 109  JAN 19 08" through "102861 297 JUL 23 09".

No other Trail's End or Weaver Popcorn Company products are part of this recall.

"Although Weaver Popcorn has received no complaints or reports of any illness related to this product, we are taking this precautionary action out of an abundance of caution and consistent with our 80-year unwavering commitment to consumer safety and to providing the highest-quality products," said Mike Weaver, Weaver Popcorn Company President and CEO.

Since the vast majority of this product has not been sold for a number of months, it is assumed that what has been sold has been consumed. Consumers who have purchased this recalled product are urged to destroy it. Consumers with an unopened, sealed popcorn foil bag, with the above listed code dates, can arrange for a refund by calling 1-800-782-4255 (Monday through Friday from 8:00am - 3:00pm EST) or by sending an email to ccp@trails-end.com

*** Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare cases, infection with salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses, such as arterial infections (i.e. infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis. For more information on Salmonella, please visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Website at http://www.cdc.gov.

Child and Dependent Care Expenses

Per the Internal Revenue Service, and their publication 503, on page 7
states:

" Camp.  The cost of sending your child to an overnight camp is not
considered a work-related expense.  The cost of sending your child to a day
camp may be a work-related expense, even if the camp specializes in a
particular a activity, such as computers or soccer."

Also on page 8 of publication 503 Provider Tax Identification -

IRS states: " You do not have to show the taxpaper identification number if
the care provider is one of certain tax-exempt organizations (such as a
